Text Box: Over 30 years ago we found our family from Italy. It was through a wedding video job that one of our clients who was Italian was conversing with my father and they asked him a few questions about what part of Italy was he from. He replied that he wasn’t but my mother was. Her last name was Carbone and her father came from a small town in Sicily called Casteldaccia. In amazement the young couple said that they were from Casteldaccia, and they know Carbone’s that have been looking for their family in America. Low and behold they knew a lot of our cousins and we immediately were put in touch with them. One of our cousins, Maria, was living on Long Island and about to get married. As with all of our family, we bonded immediately. Within a couple of months my mother’s cousins Pietro and Giovanna Carbone flew into New York along with their son Ivo. It was so magical the way we were in touch. The following year My mother, me and my two uncles, Ciro and Andrew flew to Casteldacccia to see the cousins. There were more than 80 cousins in this small town and we got to meet them all. We were treated like celebrities. We are still in contact through face book with a lot of them through my cousin Ivo. Not only was it a small world for us meeting everyone and for years some of them have been at our house and us at theirs. Recently, my brother Joseph and sister in law Gloria (pictured top left) went to a party at a neighbors. It was a great time, and my brother, who is also known as the Mayor of Long Island, struck up a conversation with one of the guests, Andrea Schembri, pictured top right. Through conversation it was learned that he to was from Casteldaccia and it wound up that he knew and was friends with our cousins. He even told us that a restaurant that we frequent (Momma’s in Copiague Long Island) the owner is also from Casteldaccia. It’s more than 30 years since first contact and we’re still running into people from that little town in Italy. Who would have ever guessed.
